Today i wanna share to you about Recount Text, i thought you already know this lesson or have even studied it right? but i'll review it again, so let's get started. :)

Definition of Recount Text

Recount Text is a text that describes a story, action and activity with the aim of entertaining as well as providing information to readers.

This type of text can also be interpreted as a text that retells events or experiences that existed in the past.

Characteristic features of Recount Text

– Using past tense sentences.

Example: I spent my holiday in Jakarta and I was very happy. (Past or has happened).

– Use the verbs action.

Example: spent, went, brought, run, eat, go, took, etc.

– Use adverbs and adverbial phrases to describe the time, place and way.

Example: last month, in Malang, lately, etc.

– Focus on a specific object.

For example me (writer).

– Use conjunctions and time connectives to describe sequences of events / times.

Example: and, after that, or, on Monday, on Sunday, etc.

Generic Structure of Recount Text

Recount Text has 3 main structures, including:

1. Orientation (Opener)

Provides background information needed to be able to understand a text, such as (who was involved, where it happened, and when it took place.)

Example :

Last week I stayed the night at my friend’s house, Nadia. With my other three friends, Amanda, Tiara and Clarissa. Nadia’s house is so pretty.

It has a big garden with a lot of kind of flowers and a big swimming pool. Right from the balcony, we can see the scenery of the whole of Bandung city.

2. Event ( Content )

Is a recording of events that took place or a series of events which are then arranged in chronological order.

For example: “In the first day…. And in the next day…. And in the last day…. ”

Example :

When we first arrived at 8 AM, Nadia has welcomed us and asked us to get around the house as she explains all the room inside her home along with its function.

After walking around the house, we gathered at Nadia's room to put our things. Then, we go to the garden and have some tea while chatting with each other.

At 12 PM, Nadia asked us to eat the lunch prepared by the chef. The food was delicious. It was a traditional food from Korea. After lunch, we decided to go swimming.

We had a good time. Around 5 PM, we cleaned ourselves and prepared for a BBQ session for the night. We ate a lot of meat and saw the city lights of Bandung City.

Right by 11 PM, we got back to the house and sat in a circle in Nadia's room to talk and have some discussion.

3. Reorientation (Closing / conclusion)

This last stage is the repetition stage of the introduction that was in the first stage. This repetition will summarize all the events that are told.

You can write opinions or comments on events that have already happened.

Example :

We finally go to sleep around 2 AM, it was late, but we had so much fun. I would love to go back to nadia's house.

Types of Recount Text

1. Personal Recount

Personal recount is a recount text with a function to tell about the personal experience of the author.

For example: vacation experiences, getting married, and others.

2. Imaginative

Imaginative is a type of recount text with a function to present an imaginative story. Then pour it into the story of events or incidents that have occurred.

3. Factual Recount

Factual recount is a type of recount text with a function to present a report of actual events / facts.

For example : scientific reports, science experiment reports, loss reports and others.

4. Historical Recount

This type tells about history, both historical sites and historical objects.

For example : the story of the Prambanan temple.

I will also give an example of a Recount Text, when i meet my idol 😊

I am a Directioner, the fandom name for One Direction. So, 5 years ago i get the chance to go to the One Direction Meet and Greet after i bought their album and mini album. The event was held at a famous mall in South Jakarta. On that day, I was very excited and nervous. (Orientation)

I went to the venue early because i want to make sure i'm not late. I go thought the document checking and enter the place. I found a seat and chat with other fans. When the event starts i waited patiently. I was very happy just seeing their faces up and close. It was something that i can't do in concert. So, when it is my turn, i go to their table and ask their autographs and photos. (Event)

Finally, the meet and greet event was finally finished. I took one more glimpse of the boys and take photos from a distance. Then, i walked out of the mall. The day it was a very memorable experience that i will always remember. (Re-orientation)
